ORTHODOX
CHURCH
Orthodox church in Barcelona, in collaboration with the architect Salvador Torrents i Verges.
Not executed.
The origin of this preliminary project, not executed and continuously modified by its promoter Father Serafín, was the need for the Russian Orthodox community in Barcelona to have a place of worship adapted to their needs and equipped with a school and housing for parents.
On the one hand, the enormous diversity of Orthodox churches made it difficult to specify a definitive line of design. This was the first project presented, forthright declined, and the beginning of a long series of proposals that have yet to be finalized.
On the other hand, this project was carried out without a previous lot and so forth, we conducted an exercise of specifying the needs of surfaces and volumes concerning the program: A church for about 400 faithful fellowship, some spaces for meetings or conferences, three houses and 4 or 5 classrooms -among all the fundamental characteristics of these spaces: iconostasis, overhead light, segregated perimeter spaces, latticework openings etc.-.
Concrete, wood and latticework, in an attempt to reflect the noble materials historically used: wood and concrete, in a large volume of triangular geometries, which encloses the entire program in a single piece to gain visibility. A finished tower/chandelier, which can be seen from the inside and the outside during day and night, serves as a lighthouse of spirituality hand by hand with the light of the candle lights. Topped with the golden cupulin as the symbol of the Orthodox church. A bell tower with straps was added on one side.
